Courses (for 4th &
5th Years) February-May 2012 (not during Easter Holidays)
10-week Make Music on Your
Computer Course
Tuesdays (5:00pm - 7:00pm) and Wednesdays
(2:30pm - 4:30pm)
Specifically
aimed at 4th & 5th Year Secondary School
students, you will learn how to make your own music (any style) on a computer
using free, legal software (provided).
Own Laptops & headphones are preferable, but not essential.
100 Euro

facilities and enrol)

Overview of 10-week
Make Music on Your Computer Course:
* Introduction to software, main page,
transport, track control panel etc. MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)
* Programming Drums and Bass instruments (rhythm section). Editing note length
and velocity
* Programming keyboard and synthesizers. Chords, scales, melody, atmospheres.
* Recording MIDI using virtual MIDI keyboard, working with the metronome,
quantising.
* Multi-timbral instruments, MIDI channel assignment, polyphony.
* MIDI controllers, pitch, volume, pan, programme change, note-bending, tempo
change.
* Song construction using Audio Loops.
* Creating backing tracks using MIDI files. Identifying tracks and applying
instruments.
* Mixer and Effects. Adding final polish to your music.
* Mixdown. Your music to go on CD, MP3 or OGG. Audio CD sub codes.

22 week Sound Recording & Music Technology Evening Course
Next start date:
Thursday 8th March 2012 - 2nd August 2012
Hands-on from Week 1, you will learn the basics of
Sound Engineering, get to Record & Mix a Singer-Songwriter during the first 11
weeks, progressing on to Recording & Mixing a live 3 or 4-piece band during the 2nd
term (drums, bass, guitar, vocals)

We shall be running a 22 week Sound Recording & Music Technology Course during
the daytime commencing 2012 - more information will be announced here soon
Overview of 22 week course:
* Introduction to Mixing Desk
topology, Mic pre-amps, connections between Mixer and Computer Audio Interface,
& introduction to software
* Auxiliary sends and headphone mixes, effects sends/returns
* Reverb - what it is, when to use it, main controls
* Compressors - dynamic range, controls, uses, special compressors
* EQ (Equaliser) - frequency response, controls, uses, 'magic' frequencies
* Microphones I: Types (Dynamic, Condenser, Electret) their uses and
differences & mic-ing up many different instruments
* Microphones II: Recording practice & preparation work for recording
singer-songwriter
* Mixing exercise I: Tutor demonstrates full mix of singer-songwriter
recording, & students watch and ask questions
* Mixing exercise II: Students do their own full mix of singer-songwriter
recording, guided by tutor
* Recording: Students mic up and record a live singer-songwriter, guided by
tutor, students take wav files home and mix recording
* Routing and Busses,
Analogue & Digital Mixers
* Compressors & Gates, Limiters, Multi-Band, Gate side-chain
* EQ - Anatomy of sound, harmonics, spectral editing, breaking sound into
its component parts
* Reverb & Delay - recreating individual acoustic spaces and manipulation
for a 3 dimensional feel
* Microphones - understanding the specifications, stereo mic techniques for
drum overheads/ensembles etc
* Noise reduction and editing. Phase - avoid, recognise and fix
phase, and hear how it can wreck recordings
* Automation
* Drum replacement
* Tutor demonstrates full mix of a band
recording, & students watch and ask questions
* Students do full mix of a band recording,
guided by tutor
* Recording: Students record a
live 3 or 4-piece band, guided by Tutor
* Mixing: Students mix previous week's live band recording, guided by Tutor
* Introduction to the Mastering process

Weekend Courses:
Mixing & Music Production Weekend - Create Mixes with more punch and clarity:
2-day weekend course for those who want to improve their
Mixes, creating 3 dimensions with width, height & depth, and learning various
techniques to make all the elements of a Mix fit together
13.5 hours comprising:
Saturday: 11:00-2:00 (lunch break) 3:00-6:00
Sunday: 11:00-2:00 (lunch break) 3:00-7:30
These are

kit Weekend:
Exploring the different microphone
techniques to effectively record drums
* Mic up a full drum kit played by a pro drummer
* Learn to mic in different ways for different effects
* Utilise Carrig Sound's large, acoustically treated recording area
* Learn about different microphones, their properties and what they're best used
for
* Discover about phase coherency
* Learn to use Gates, Compression and Drum Replacement programmes
